As per our 11 Land & Environment Principles: “Tsuut’ina Nation lands are for the use and benefit of
all Tsuut’ina Citizens. Tsuut’ina Nation Citizens have a collective responsibility to retain the quality of
land, air, water, and biodiversity, and to manage this natural capital in a way that conserves all its values,
be the environment, economic, social, or cultural for the present and Wusa (future) generations. Tsuut’ina
lands are Assigned for Citizens to occupy and use pursuant to the customs and traditions of the Nation.”
The purpose of this policy is to provide an internal process for Tsuut'ina Nation Nisk’a use
and the administration of Nisk’a Assignments to Tsuut’ina Nation Citizens on Common
Non-Designated Nisk’a.
This policy will apply to all Tsuut’ina’s Nation Citizens with a historic or current Assignment
of Tsuut'ina Nation Nisk’a management and for the protection of the Wusa.
Who is eligible for a Nisk’a assignment? Tsuut’ina Nation citizens; must be in good standing
with the Nation and must be at least 25years of age. A maximum number of acres will be
applied per use. Citizens with the means to farm, ranch, and raise animals must follow the
procedures within this document to be considered.
What are the Responsibilities of the Assignee? Assignees are responsible for Niska’s
stewardship, land use plan, which includes future generational use. Adherence to Tsuut’ina
11 Land & Environment principles, applicable laws and policies, leasing and permit
processes, and ensuring that there is no impact to the safety, access to other Nation
Citizens.
What is the Nisk’a Assignment Agreement Process? All Nisk’a Assignment Agreement
Assignees shall register Nisk’a assignments through a signed form submission to the Lands
Department. This must include a legal land description and be approved by Head Chief and
Minor Chiefs. This agreement shall include the date of submission, amount and use and
(legal Description) location of Niska, monies involved, and a signed acknowledgement form
including exemptions.
Can land be revoked (taken away)? Yes. Under this policy, if a citizen willfully damages the
environment, does not comply with Tsuut’ina legislation, has a criminal conviction, or has
no family succession.
